Penn State picked up the first verbal commitment of the Bill O'Brien era on Monday night when Class of 2012 Worchester (Mass.) Academy defensive back Jordan Lucas chose Penn State, according to Lions 247's Sean Fitz.
The 6-foot, 176-pound safety is rated a three-star prospect by Scout and 247 Sports and was given a scout's grade of 77 by ESPN, which breaks down his game this way.
Lucas is an exciting athlete that can make game changing plays on offense or defense. Very good quickness, displays the ability to make defenders miss in short space. Play making ability with the ball in his hand. Shows good balance and body control.
247 Sports reports he had scholarship offers on the table from Akron, Massachusetts and Old Dominion while Scout adds and offer from Penn State's in-state rival, Temple.
The new Nittany Lion had this to say about his decision to Fitz.
"They came, we had a good meeting with Coach Roof, Coach Butler and Coach Vanderlinden. They sat down with my head coach after they got the academic part squared away," he said. "They let me know that I had an offer. They knew I was going to commit before they offered, so they were happy to hear the news."
Lucas joins four-star-rated prospect Armani Reeves as the second defensive backfield recruit in the Class of 2012. Reeves has been entertaining other schools since former coach Joe Paterno's firing on Nov. 9 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
