Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin won the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night as the NHL's most valuable player.
The Russian superstar won the Hart for the first time at the NHL Awards ceremony at the Wynn Las Vegas casino. Malkin also collected the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer and the Ted Lindsay Award from his fellow NHLPA members as the NHL's best player.
"It's the best day of my life," Malkin said. "It's very exciting."
Malkin, who turns 26 next month, won the Hart Trophy over Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos and New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who won the Vezina Trophy for the first time.
St. Louis' Ken Hitchcock won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's top coach for the first time in his lengthy career.
San Jose exhibition: A group of touring Russian hockey players will be in San Jose on Wednesday for an exhibition game to mark the 40th anniversary of the historic 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union. They'll be trying to score against one of their countrymen, former Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
The 7 p.m. exhibition game at Sharks Ice will feature at least one member of the Soviet team that shocked North America by humbling the Canadians until they rallied to take the eight-game series with a 4-3-1 record. Alexander Yakushev, now 65, led the Soviets in scoring that series and is listed among the Russian Legends touring
this summer.They will face a team that includes former Sharks Nabokov, Owen Nolan, Curtis Brown, Dave Maley and Kyle McLaren.
Proceeds from the $10 tickets will go to the Jr. Sharks Scholarship Fund. A reception will follow at Stanley's Sports Bar from 9 to 11 p.m. with a game ticket required. Space is limited.
Doughty case: The Los Angeles County district attorney's office is determining whether to file charges based on date-rape allegations against Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty by a woman he met in a seaside bar. District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said a decision is expected by week's end.
Blue Jackets: Veteran NHL coach Craig Hartsburg is joining Columbus as associate coach.
